KADOKAWA to Launch "Studio One Base" in Ikebukuro by Autumn 2026

In a major move for the Japanese entertainment industry, KADOKAWA has officially announced that it will open Studio One Base, a massive production hub that will consolidate various anime production studios under one roof. This new base is set to be located in the iconic Sunshine City complex in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, and is scheduled to start operations in the fall of 2026. It is a very big step for the company as it looks to streamline its massive production pipeline.

During the announcement, key figures were present, including Tsuyoshi Kikuchi (KADOKAWA Executive Officer and Chief Studio Officer), Miyuki Takagiwa (Toshima Ward Mayor), and Hidemi Waki (Sunshine City Representative Director and President). This project isn't just about a building; it is the first major step in KADOKAWA's fresh initiative titled "Create creators. Create studios." The main goal here is to fundamentally strengthen how they handle both animation and live-action projects in the coming years.

Addressing the Growing Pains of the Anime Industry

We all know that everything you need to know about KADOKAWA shows they are a global powerhouse, but even giants face hurdles. In recent years, the anime industry in Japan has been expanding like anything, both locally and across the globe. While the number of productions is increasing and projects are getting way larger in scale, the actual production sites are struggling. There is a serious lack of skilled creators, and the work itself has become incredibly complex.

To fix this and build a sustainable system, KADOKAWA started a new Studio Business Department back in April 2025. This department was created to oversee all their animation and live-action studios. They have been trying to improve the working environment for artists, making human resources and recruitment better, and even consolidating back-office work so that creators don't have to worry about administrative headaches. These efforts are all coming together with the launch of the new Ikebukuro hub.

A Vision for a World-Class Anime City

The Studio One Base will physically bring together multiple studios into a space of roughly 1,400 tsubo. This setup will help in several ways:

  • Faster Collaboration: It will speed up how information is shared between different teams.
  • Focus on Quality: Creators will get an environment where they can concentrate solely on production without distractions.
  • Talent Development: It will be easier to foster young talent by letting them work alongside industry veterans.
  • Resource Sharing: Strengthening the know-how and technical collaboration between different internal studios.

Moreover, the collaboration between KADOKAWA, Toshima Ward, and Sunshine City is expected to be very strong. The aim is to turn Ikebukuro into a "world-class anime city." Usually, people go to Ikebukuro to watch anime or buy merch, but now it will also be a place where the magic actually happens. It is quite exciting to think that everything you need to know about KADOKAWA and its future hits might be traced back to this very hub in Sunshine City.

By adding the role of creating and nurturing the industry to Ikebukuro's existing charm, the city will become a complete ecosystem for fans and professionals alike. We are definitely looking forward to seeing how this move changes the landscape of our favourite shows by 2026.
