Chiruran: Edo and Kyoto Editions Set for Global Release

There is some really great news for fans of historical action dramas. The live-action adaptation of Chiruran Shinsengumi Requiem, which is based on the original manga by Shinya Umemura and Eiji Hashimoto, has just released some very striking key visuals. These visuals are for two specific parts of the project: the special drama titled Edo Seishun-hen and the upcoming drama series Kyoto Keissen-hen. It is quite exciting to see how these legendary characters are being brought to life with such intensity.

A First Look at the Key Visuals and Story Details

The visual for Edo Seishun Hen is quite a treat for the eyes. It features Isamu Kondo and several other members of the Shieikan dojo gathered around Toshizo Hijikata. Hijikata is shown looking ahead with a very sharp and determined gaze, which perfectly captures his character. This part of the story also includes characters who significantly impact Hijikata's journey, such as Kamo Serizawa, Izo Okada, and Katamori Matsudaira. It is definitely one of the reasons why Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem is considered such a legendary series among fans.

On the other hand, the visual for Kyoto Battle (Kyoto Keissen-hen) takes us into the turbulent atmosphere of Kyoto. This one is much more action-oriented, showing a roaring Hijikata filled with raw fighting spirit clashing against Serizawa, who is wearing a fearless smile. This intense rivalry is a core part of the Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem narrative, and seeing it depicted like this is quite thrilling for the audience.

Worldwide Distribution and Streaming Schedule

Perhaps the biggest update is that this project is going global. It has been officially decided that the series will be distributed worldwide. Starting from May 9th, HBO Max will be carrying the show in more than 100 countries and territories. This includes North America, Latin America, Europe, and various parts of Asia. For the international release on HBO Max, the title has been changed to Song of the Samurai.

Yuki Yamada, the actor who is playing Toshizo Hijikata, shared some thoughts about the release. He mentioned that he would be very happy if people could feel the deep emotions and "feelings put into the sword" while watching it, similar to how they would enjoy a high-stakes adventure action drama. It seems the team has worked very hard to ensure the sword-fighting sequences feel authentic and powerful.

Broadcast Details for Fans in Japan

The story of Chiruran Shinsengumi Requiem is set in Kyoto during the final years of the Edo period (Bakumatsu). It focuses on the wild, passionate, and often dangerous lives of the Shinsengumi patriots. For those following the release in Japan, the broadcast schedule is as follows:

  • Edo Seishun-hen: This special drama will air on terrestrial television for two consecutive nights on March 26th and 27th.
  • Kyoto Battle: The drama series that follows the events of the special will be exclusively distributed on the U-NEXT streaming platform.

This dual-platform release strategy ensures that fans can catch the beginning of the journey on TV before moving to streaming for the more detailed series. It is truly a big moment for the franchise, and with the global reach of HBO Max, many more people will get to experience this bold interpretation of Japanese history.
