Galaxy Express 999: Immersion into the Infinite Space Experience
The world of classic anime is getting a massive boost with a large-scale spatial experiential exhibition event titled Galaxy Express 999 The Galaxy Experience: That Journey Still Continuing. This event is actually based on the iconic 1979 animated movie Galaxy Express 999, which originally came from the brilliant mind of Leiji Matsumoto. It is scheduled to be held from April 25th to October 26th at the Grand Gallery, located on the 1st floor of the Kadokawa Musashino Museum in Tokorozawa Sakura Town, Saitama. For fans of the series, this is really a big chance to relive the magic in a way that has never been done before.

The visual for Galaxy Express 999 The Galaxy Experience: That journey is still continuing showcases the scale of this project. Basically, this exhibition is a new attempt to actually extend movies into a physical space rather than just screening them on a flat screen. The main venue, which is a huge 1,000 square meter Grand Gallery, has been completely renovated with top-notch video and sound systems just for this show. They are using a system centered on the latest 4K laser projector and 8.1CH surround sound to represent the galaxy on the largest scale in Japan. By using the walls, floors, and the entire room, you can enjoy an immersive experience in the movie's story.
Key Highlights of the Immersive Journey
The exhibition covers several emotional and iconic moments from the film that have defined the legacy of the Galaxy Express 999 series. Visitors can walk through scenes including:
- The heartbreaking farewell to Tetsuro's mother.
- Meeting the mysterious and beautiful Maetel.
- The intense confrontation with the Mechanical Count.
- A legendary encounter with the space pirate Captain Harlock.
- The powerful and unforgettable final scene of the movie.
One of the coolest things is that a full-sized Galaxy Railway vehicle is also on display. You can actually climb aboard the train and take a commemorative photo, making it feel like you are a passenger on this cosmic ride. At the entrance, they show a digest video explaining exactly why Tetsuro set out on his journey in the first place. This helps the audience get properly immersed before they even step into the main area. You then pass through a vestibule leading to a space station and finally enter the starting point, Galaxy Station.
A Deep Dive into the Production
After you finish the main immersive content, there is a 25m long corridor with actual railroad tracks in the center. Along this path, famous dialogue from the movie version is displayed, giving it a very nostalgic feel. Beyond this corridor, you will find a special corner that introduces the production process of the exhibition event. It also features various movie setting materials that were used during the creation of the 1979 masterpiece. It is a great way to understand Galaxy Express 999 and the hard work that goes into making such a large-scale project.
Regarding the tickets, they are priced at 2,700 yen for adults, 2,200 yen for junior high and high school students, and 1,500 yen for elementary school students. For preschoolers, the entry is totally free. It is best to check the official event website for more details, like specific closing dates or special rules.
