The Isekai Trend Continues to Captivate Japan

Isekai has dominated Japan's multimedia landscape for several years, bringing readers top franchises such as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World and many others. Six months into 2026, official Japanese sales data has confirmed which isekai IP is the year's ultimate champion so far.

Per PR Times, ebookJapan -- a digital bookstore that offers over 650,000 titles -- has released its official manga sales rankings for the first half of 2026. The shop's bestsellers were evaluated and categorized based on their respective demographics and genres.

Created by Fuse, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was originally published as a web novel on the prominent self-publishing site Shosetsuka ni Naro in February 2013. Two years later, illustrator Taiki Kawakami created the series' first official manga adaptation.

The story begins when 37-year-old office worker Satoru Mikami is spirited away to a sword-and-sorcery-style fantasy world after being stabbed to death. Reborn as a magical slime creature, Satoru uses his new abilities to gain a human form. After meeting a dragon named Veldora, Satoru is gifted the name Rimuru Tempest and sets out to create a nation where humans and fantasy creatures can co-exist.

Sales and Achievements

As of July 2026, collective light novel and manga volume sales have surpassed the 60-million copy milestone. In 2022, the manga adaptation also won the 46th Kodansha Manga Award in the Best Shonen category.
