It was announced on Official X through a relative that Keiko Okamoto passed away due to cerebral hemorrhage on May 6th.

In the 1990s, Okamoto worked on 'Mugen Patroller YUZU' for Runrun and 'CUTE BEAT Oshare Club!' for Nakayoshi (both published by Kodansha), and since March 2026, he has been serializing 'The Fallen Substitute Lady Wants to Run Away from the Cold Duke!'. Okamoto's official X posted a memorial message titled "[To everyone who supported Keiko Okamoto]." 'Drawing a sparkling world makes me feel happy,' he said happily. When asked why he continues to draw manga, he answered, 'Because I believe that every single frame and word I draw will provide strength and sustenance to someone else. That's what manga is for me.' In memory of the deceased, he wrote, 'I would be happy if you would continue to read his works and remember even one frame of his work. I think that is what he would have wanted more than anything.'
Manga Maomao, the distributor of 'A Fallen Substitute Lady Wants to Run Away from the Cold Duke!' announced the death of Okamoto on Official X today, June 18th, and wrote a memorial: 'Mr. Okamoto devoted himself to this work until the very end, and continued to draw each and every character with love and care. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for his efforts thus far, and express our deepest condolences.' In addition, 'The Fallen Substitute Lady Wants to Run Away from the Cold Duke!' will conclude with the currently available 6th episode, and it was announced that 'We are planning to publish an electronic book containing the manga text up to episode 6 and the character plot from episode 7 onwards.'
