Tatsunoko Production to Adapt Red River Manga into TV Anime

Tatsunoko Production recently announced its plans to produce a television anime adaptation of Chie Shinohara's popular shōjo manga, Red River (Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori). This exciting development has set the anime community abuzz, with fans eagerly anticipating the series debut scheduled for this summer.

Renowned manga artist Chie Shinohara celebrated the announcement with a special illustration, adding a personal touch to the reveal of the upcoming anime adaptation. Notable industry talents are set to work on this project, with Kōsuke Kobayashi, known for works like Waccha PriMagi! and Alice or Alice, directing the anime at Tatsunoko Production.

Furthermore, the series scripts will be overseen by the talented Yoriko Tomita, acclaimed for her work on The Elusive Samurai and My Dress-Up Darling. The character designs for the anime will be crafted by the skilled Kenji Fujisaki, known for his work on titles such as YU-NO: A girl who chants love at the bound of this world. and Blood Lad.

Adding a touch of authenticity to the production, historical researchers Kimiyoshi Matsumura and Daisuke Yoshida, affiliated with the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology as part of the Middle Eastern Culture Center in Japan, will contribute their expertise to ensure the accurate portrayal of historical elements in the series.

Viz Media, a prominent player in the manga localization scene, has been instrumental in bringing Red River to English-speaking audiences. The company originally started releasing the manga in English back in 2004, publishing all 28 volumes by 2010. Building on this success, Viz Media began reintroducing the series in 3-in-1 omnibus editions starting in October 2024, with the upcoming release of the seventh omnibus volume slated for April 21.

The manga's captivating storyline follows Yuri, a young Japanese girl whose life takes a dramatic turn after a supernatural incident transports her to an ancient village in the Middle East, where she becomes embroiled in a perilous adventure involving a human sacrifice at the queen's palace.

Originally serialized from 1995 to 2002 in Shogakukan's Sho-Comi magazine, Red River has garnered a dedicated fan base over the years. The manga's popularity even inspired a stage play by the esteemed all-female Takarazuka Revue troupe in 2018, further solidifying its cultural impact and appeal.

As anime enthusiasts eagerly await the premiere of the Red River television adaptation, the collaboration between Tatsunoko Production and an array of talented industry professionals promises an anime experience that will captivate both existing fans and newcomers to the captivating world of Red River.
