Kiichi Hotta Returns with a New One-Shot: The Secret of the Cool Beauty

There is some really wonderful news for the fans of the classic series Kimi to Boku. The very talented manga artist Kiichi Hotta has finally made a comeback with a brand-new one-shot titled Mito-san and Yomogihara-kun, Tokimori Shima-chan. This fresh story was recently published in the April issue of Monthly Shonen Gangan by Square Enix, which hit the stands today on March 12th. It is always quite a treat to see Hotta-sensei's soft and charming art style back in a popular magazine like Gangan.

A Story of Hidden Awkwardness and Stuffed Friends

The plot of this one-shot is actually very sweet and relatable. The main protagonist is a high school girl named Kei Mito. Now, Kei is someone who is so stunningly beautiful that literally everyone turns their head when she walks by. Because of her calm and composed vibe, people around her respect her deeply and think she is this "cool beauty" who has everything under control. But honestly, the reality is completely different. In truth, Kei is just a very poor communicator who finds it extremely difficult to talk to people or make friends.

Because of her social anxiety, her only real companion is Shima-chan, which is actually a stuffed long-tailed moth. One fine day, Kei decides to go out and enjoy the cherry blossoms, and of course, she brings Shima-chan along for the outing. However, things take a very interesting turn when her popular classmate, Aihara, accidentally spots her talking to her stuffed moth. Instead of making fun of her, the story shows how Aihara starts supporting her. It is a very heartwarming take on how someone can help another person understand human relationships bit by bit.

  • A Unique Protagonist: Kei Mito’s struggle with being a "cool beauty" while actually being socially awkward is very endearing.
  • Heartwarming Themes: The manga explores why this heartwarming manga is a must read for those who love gentle character growth.
  • Charming Companion: Shima-chan adds a bit of whimsical charm to the otherwise realistic slice-of-life setting.

Monthly Shonen Gangan April Issue Highlights

Apart from Kiichi Hotta's return, the April issue of Monthly Shonen Gangan is packed with other cool stuff too. The cover of this month's issue features Daisuke Hagiwara's work, Koi to Yobu ni wa Sasayaka desu ga (It's a Little Early to Call it Love). Fans of Hagiwara-sensei, who is famous for Horimiya, will definitely be happy to see this. Plus, there is a special bonus in the appendix—a clear file featuring a "Mello Kyun Scene" from the first volume of the book. It’s a great collector's item if you're following that series.

If you are a fan of slice-of-life stories that have a touch of romance and a lot of emotional depth, then understanding why this heartwarming manga is a must read will be easy once you dive into Hotta's latest work. The way the story depicts Aihara's daily life as he supports Kei is just too wholesome. It really captures that feeling of finding someone who accepts your quirks without judgement.

Overall, Kiichi Hotta has once again managed to create a world that feels soft, kind, and very human. Seeing Kei's small attempts to open up to the world is very moving. We can only hope that this one-shot might lead to a full serialization in the future, as the characters already feel very well-developed and lovable. For now, make sure to grab the Gangan issue and enjoy this beautiful little story.
