Toji in Jujutsu Kaisen is Toji Fushiguro, born Toji Zenin, a mercenary known as the Sorcerer Killer. He has no cursed energy at all. A condition called Heavenly Restriction took it from him and gave him a superhuman body in return, and he uses that body to kill sorcerers for money. He is also Megumi Fushiguro's father and the man who came closest to killing Satoru Gojo.

That mix is why Jujutsu Kaisen's Toji sticks with fans. He appears in only a handful of episodes, yet his choices shape Gojo, Megumi, and the direction of the whole story. He is not a hero, but he is not a simple villain either, and the series never lets you settle on one label.

MyAnimeThoughts covers Jujutsu Kaisen character by character, and this guide gives you the full picture in one place. You will see why Toji matters, how his powers and weapons work, where he came from, how he treated Megumi, and how his fight with Gojo ends. Spoilers for the Hidden Inventory arc and later chapters follow.

Why Toji matters in Jujutsu Kaisen

Toji matters because he is the series' strongest argument against its own power system. Jujutsu Kaisen treats cursed energy as the measure of a sorcerer, and Toji beats elite sorcerers without a drop of it. That contradiction drives a large part of the plot, and it is why Toji in Jujutsu Kaisen remains a fan favorite after so little screen time.

Toji proves that in Jujutsu Kaisen, having no cursed energy can be the most dangerous thing a person carries.

Toji at a glance

Here are the basics before the details. Fans spell his name "Toji" or "Touji," and both refer to the same Sorcerer Killer, who debuts in the Season 2 Hidden Inventory arc.

Detail Answer
Birth name Toji Zenin
Later surname Fushiguro, his wife's family name
Nickname Sorcerer Killer
Ability Heavenly Restriction, zero cursed energy and a superhuman body
Family Son: Megumi Fushiguro
Anime debut Season 2, Hidden Inventory arc
Japanese voice actor Takehito Koyasu

What he changes in the story

His mission against the Star Plasma Vessel ends with Riko Amanai's death and leaves Gojo and Suguru Geto badly shaken. The near-fatal fight that follows pushes Gojo to a new level of control over his abilities. That awakening is how Gojo becomes the strongest sorcerer in the series.

Megumi is the other half of the legacy. Toji's decisions as a father shape Megumi's guarded personality, and his death is what brings the boy into Gojo's care. Remove Toji and you remove the origin of both the most powerful sorcerer and one of the main protagonists.

How Toji's Heavenly Restriction works in a fight

Heavenly Restriction is a bargain: Toji gives up cursed energy completely and receives extreme physical ability in return. It is a rare condition, and Toji's version is the cleanest example the series shows. Every fight he wins comes down to that trade, plus the weapons he carries.

Toji does not fight sorcerers on their terms. He picks a fight where cursed energy does not help them.

What the bargain gives him

Toji's speed, strength, reflexes, and senses all sit far above a normal human's. He can also see curses even though he cannot use cursed energy, so he fights spirits as easily as people. Sorcerers detect each other through cursed energy, and he gives off none, which lets him slip past barriers that would stop other intruders.

That invisibility is half of his method. He strikes before a target is ready, avoids fair fights, and treats every job as an ambush. Toji from Jujutsu Kaisen is less a duelist than a professional who controls the conditions of the fight.

The cursed tools he carries

Toji's body is only part of the threat. Cursed tools let him hurt targets that a normal weapon cannot touch.

Tool What it does
Inverted Spear of Heaven Forcibly cancels an active cursed technique
Playful Cloud Special grade three-section staff, its power scales with the wielder's strength
Chain of a Thousand Miles Long chain used for ranged attacks and paired with the spear
Soul Split Katana Cuts the soul of what it strikes, ignoring physical hardness
Ugly Treasure Armory cursed spirit that swallows and stores his weapons

Toji's backstory and his relationship with Megumi

Toji's backstory is a story of rejection. He was born into the Zenin clan, a family that values cursed techniques above everything, and with no cursed energy he was treated as worthless. Almost everything he later becomes grows from that, and it answers why Toji turned to killing.

Toji did not choose cruelty at birth. The Zenin clan taught him that his worth was zero, and he built a career on proving them wrong.

From Zenin outcast to mercenary

The clan mistreated him for years, and he left it behind along with the Zenin name. He became a freelance assassin who accepts contracts on sorcerers, and the Sorcerer Killer reputation followed. The motive is mostly money, plus a long grudge against a world that ranks people by cursed energy. He is also a heavy gambler, which keeps him hunting for the next payout.

His one real attempt at a normal life came through marriage. He married a woman and took the Fushiguro name, and the couple had Megumi. She died young, and Toji lost the only stable thing he had.

Toji and Megumi

Toji's relationship with Megumi is the most painful part of his story. He did not raise the boy well. He left him, and he sold Megumi's future to the Zenin clan, the same family that had crushed him. His final conversation with Gojo shows he understood how badly he had failed.

Even so, Toji's last act toward Megumi was to entrust him to Gojo. Fans read that as a quiet attempt at repair, though it does not excuse the abandonment. Megumi grows into the sorcerer his father never tried to be, someone who fights to protect people.

Toji's fight with Gojo and how he dies

Toji dies in the Hidden Inventory arc, killed by Gojo's Hollow Technique: Purple. The fight that leads there is the most famous in his story, because he nearly wins. Understanding why he attacked Gojo, and how the fight turns, explains the rest of his arc.

Toji lost the fight at the exact moment Gojo stopped being merely the strongest and became unstoppable.

Why Toji went after Gojo

Toji was a paid killer, and the job was simple. He was hired to eliminate the Star Plasma Vessel, Riko Amanai, and Gojo was the bodyguard standing in the way. There was no personal feud, only a contract. He killed Riko, then fought Gojo, who had defeated almost every enemy before him.

The Inverted Spear of Heaven and his unreadable presence let him hurt Gojo badly. Gojo was left near death, and that is the point of the fight.

How Toji dies

Gojo survives by using Reverse Cursed Technique to heal himself, and the experience awakens him. He returns with new control and finishes Toji with Hollow Purple. Toji dies with Megumi on his mind. Later in the manga, he is brought back for a short return, and when he realizes he is facing his son, he ends his own life. So yes, Toji is dead, and he dies twice.

Is Toji good or bad?

Toji is an antagonist, and the series never asks you to forgive him. He kills for money, including a teenage girl, and he abandons his child. His past explains the man, but explaining is not the same as excusing. The strongest reading is that he is a villain with a tragic origin, not a misunderstood hero.

Why Toji stays with fans

Toji is a villain you understand without ever agreeing with. He shows what the Zenin clan's cruelty produces, he breaks the rule that cursed energy decides everything, and he leaves behind a son and a rival who carry his story forward.
