Personality in Time Stranger isn't flavor text — it decides which stats your Digimon grows on every level-up, which passive skills it can learn, and even which Digivolutions it can reach.
The good news: you can freely change personality throughout the game with no limitations. The bad news: the personality compass confuses everyone, and the four "corner" personalities like Reckless seem impossible to reach. GameSpot
Here's how to change Digimon personality in Time Stranger — every method, plus the corner-personality trick.

How Personality Works (60-Second Version)
- Every converted Digimon randomly gets 1 of 16 personalities, which define which stats get priority on level-up.
- There are 4 core types — Valor, Amicability, Philanthropy, and Wisdom — each tied to a main stat, and each containing 4 true personalities that add a secondary stat.
- On level-up you get two boosts: one from the category, one from the individual personality.
- Personality also gates content: a Reckless personality is one of the requirements to Jogress into Omnimon Zwart, and matching personality to a lower form is required for De-Digivolving.
What each stat does is covered in our SPI, INT and Bond guide — read them together for full build control.
Method 1: Talk to Your Digimon (Early Game)
When your partner Digimon has a speech bubble icon on the field, interact with it — your dialogue choice gradually shifts personality and raises Bond.

- Conversations trigger after roughly every 4 battles — and pre-emptive strike kills don't count toward it.
- Your choice moves a point diagonally on the compass: Valor pushes top-right, Philanthropy top-left, Amicability bottom-right, Wisdom bottom-left.
- Ignore the green words on the compass — choose based on the four boxed categories only. (This detail alone fixes most "the guide lied to me" frustration.)
This method is slow — fine for the steady path, but there's a faster way.
Method 2: DigiFarm Training Sets (Best Method)
Putting Digimon in the DigiFarm alters personality much faster and with more precision — you can see exactly which direction each training shifts before committing.
How the training sets map to the compass: Affection, Heart, Companionship, and Understanding sit at north, east, south, and west — each Training Set moves personality in one direction. Reckless → Daring? Use the Sauna set to shift right. Reckless → Astute? Classroom set moves you down into Wisdom.
It's also fully passive — your reserves shift personality while you play the main story. Combine it with farm Talent training from our max level guide and your bench improves itself.
Method 3: Digiline Messages (Reserves)
Reserve Digimon occasionally message you on the Digiline — your reply choice shifts their personality too. It's unreliable as a primary method, but free progress is free progress. Answer every message. Game8Steam Community

How to Get Reckless Personality (and Other Corners)
The four corner personalities — Reckless, Overprotective, Sly, Opportunistic — frustrate everyone because of a hidden rule:
Dialogue options are weighted by your current personality: your own quadrant appears most often, adjacent quadrants less, and the opposite quadrant doesn't appear at all. That's why you can't simply "pick toward" a corner.
The fix — two routes:
- Conversation route: To go from Brave to Reckless, alternate Philanthropy picks (shifts left/up) and Amicability picks (shifts down/right) — you'll pass through Zealous or Daring, then shift into Reckless. Zigzag diagonals into the corner.
- Digivolution route (faster): When you Digivolve, you're offered all 4 category choices — including the one normally hidden. Use that moment to pick the opposite quadrant and cut straight toward the corner.
- Stat-training shortcut: Training specific stats also shifts personality — e.g., SP training moves a Zealous Digimon toward Reckless.
Warning from the community: don't talk to your Digimon immediately before evolving it — a known bug can permanently disable conversations for that form. The full compass math lives in the excellent GameFAQs personality guide if you want to go deeper.
One More Trick: Keep Old Skills
When personality changes, your Digimon can learn a new personality skill — but here's the tech: you can decline the new skill to keep one from a previous personality while still gaining the new type's stat effects. That's how you build combos like a Wisdom-growth Digimon carrying a Valor battle skill.
