The Unlikely Union of Frieren and MapleStory
The world of anime and gaming is about to get a whole lot more exciting, as Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and MapleStory join forces in a first-ever MMORPG crossover event. The collaboration, announced via a press release, promises to bring a brand-new storyline to the game, set around Frieren's adventures.
As showcased in the new collaboration trailer, Frieren, Fern, and Stark will be entering the world of MapleStory in the game's signature chibi art style. The fantasy world-building and magic-based power system of Frieren seem deeply inspired by RPGs, making this crossover a natural fit.
A Match Made in Heaven
Besides its unique 2D side-scrolling gameplay style, MapleStory is known for its distinctly anime-inspired art direction. The lighthearted tone of MapleStory fits right at home with Frieren, as seen in the collaboration trailer. This crossover is far from the first RPG Frieren has collaborated with, but it's the first time the anime series has teamed up with a PC-based MMORPG like MapleStory.
The official description of the collaboration reads, "This collaboration merges two beloved worlds into one breathtaking adventure. Dive into a brand-new storyline alongside Frieren, taking on themed collection missions and intense boss-defeat missions. Collect magic spells, earn exclusive rewards, and experience the thrill of adventuring alongside Frieren herself."
Frieren's never-ending ambition to "collect magic spells" is one of the driving forces behind her journey in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. While few specifics about Frieren's role in the event or the actual story have been unveiled, there's much more to come in the future.
In the month leading up to the event's start date, MapleStory promises to unveil exciting event details on the official website, including sneak previews of the new content and rewards available to be claimed in this new collaboration. This event will be a great way for Frieren fans to stay occupied as they continue to wait for the anime's return with Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 3 in October 2027.
