Tsukasa Abe Shifts Spotlight to a New Romance

Renowned for co‑creating the fantasy hit Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, manga artist Tsukasa Abe has turned his attention to a fresh romance that’s already buzzing among otaku circles. The series, titled Firefly Wedding, debuted this fall and quickly earned the reputation of a sleeper hit thanks to its blend of period drama and dark romance.

Behind the Scenes: Production Powerhouse

David Production, famous for reviving JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, handles the animation, while director Takahiro Kamei—also known for the 2022 Urusei Yatsura reboot—brings a cinematic flair to the Meiji‑era setting. Script and composition duties fall to Yuko Kakihara, whose work on The Apothecary Diaries and Heaven's Lost Property ensures tight pacing and emotional depth.

Story Premise: Love in the Shadows

Set between 1868 and 1912, the narrative follows aristocratic Satoko, a refined beauty plagued by a fatal heart condition, a cruel stepmother, and jealous stepsisters. When assassins kidnap her, she proposes marriage to Shinpei Goto, the group’s most ruthless killer. Despite his violent reputation, Shinpei harbors a surprisingly tender side, and their uneasy alliance slowly blossoms into genuine affection—though powerful family forces and hidden conspiracies threaten to tear them apart.

Voice talents Koki Uchiyama (My Hero Academia) and Lynn (Fire Force) lend their voices to Shinpei and Satoko, adding layers of nuance to the characters’ turbulent journey.

Release Details and Reception

Premiering on October 9, 2026, the series has already sparked discussions for its striking visual style—thanks to character designer Yukiko Aikei (Accel World) and art director Kohei Honda (Apocalypse Hotel)—and its haunting soundtrack by NOGRID, the team behind the live‑action Blue Lock music.

Both Firefly Wedding and the Madhouse‑produced Frieren: Beyond Journey's End stream on Crunchyroll, while VIZ Media distributes the manga versions in English. As Abe celebrates this new project, fans can expect a compelling mix of historical intrigue and heartfelt romance that could define the anime season.
