The Birth of a New Storytelling Approach
Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, has revealed that she chose to go in a drastically different direction with her new series, Daemons of the Shadow Realm. In a recent interview, Arakawa explained that she wanted to prove there are other creative ways to develop a successful narrative, leading her to bypass her established formula.
This shift in approach is evident in the way Daemons of the Shadow Realm keeps readers in the dark about key details, essentially putting them in the same boat as the main character, Yuru.
A Dark Fantasy World Inspired by the Occult
Unlike Fullmetal Alchemist, which features a science-based alchemy system, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is heavily inspired by the occult and Japanese yokai, leaning further into dark fantasy. This is due to Arakawa's own long-standing interest in these concepts, which she utilized to create a new story using resources she already possessed.
The series has not hindered how well Daemons of the Shadow Realm has been received, with the manga officially surpassing 7.5 million copies in circulation and the anime series adaptation by studio Bones garnering strong reviews from viewers.
