Daisuke Sakuma and Cast Shine at AnimeJapan 2026 for Inherit the Wind

A really exciting talk event for the upcoming original TV anime Inherit the Wind was held just today, March 28th, during the massive AnimeJapan 2026 convention at Tokyo Big Sight. Fans gathered in huge numbers to get a first look at this period drama project. The energy was quite high as the main cast members made their appearance to share details about their roles and the production process behind this historical saga.

The series, also known as The Inheritance of the Wind, is a deep period drama that explores the short but intense lives of young people navigating a very turbulent era, specifically using the legendary Shinsengumi as its core theme. Today marked the very first stage event for the work, bringing together a star-studded lineup including Daisuke Sakuma (from Snow Man), who voices the main hero Jinsuke Tachikawa, Yuki Kaji as Souji Okita, Aoi Yuki as Hyogo Koganei, and Kouki Uchiyama as Toshizo Hijikata.

Sakuma, who was actually participating in AnimeJapan for the very first time, seemed quite touched. He greeted the crowd saying, "It is my first time at Anime Japan, and I am very happy to be able to stand in front of the audience for the first time with this work." His enthusiasm was really evident as he spoke about his journey with the character.

Deep Dive into the Shinsengumi Characters

During the event, the cast shared some really interesting insights about the characters they are playing. Sakuma introduced Jinsuke by highlighting his incredible speed, saying he thinks he's so fast that even other Shinsengumi members can't help but shout 'fast!' at him. A very crucial part of the plot is that Jinsuke starts the story having lost his memories. Sakuma mentioned that he feels viewers will grow to love him episode by episode, as his memories return and are "implanted" in the audience just as they are in the character. He also admitted he sympathises with Jinsuke’s reluctance toward "cutting" and "fighting," sharing that he feels similar in his desire to take initiative and help friends during tough times.

Other cast members also gave a glimpse into their roles:

Yuki Kaji described Okita Souji as an energetic person who is a bit natural but possesses absolutely genius swordsmanship.
Aoi Yuki brought some laughs by describing Koganei as a "shitty kid." She joked that as the worst kid in the Shinsengumi, he’s a perfect device to bring out troubled expressions from the other members.
Kouki Uchiyama talked about Toshizo Hijikata, who is admired by Koganei. He mentioned how Hijikata is always yelling and stern, but he tried to show softer expressions in limited scenes with characters like Mr. Kondo.

New Announcements and Future Release

The event wasn't just about talks; we also got news about the PV, broadcast schedules, and upcoming theater screenings for the advance version. A surprise reveal was that Himasa Omori will voice Kurosuke, the cat that Okita is often seen holding. They even read a message from Yuichi Nakamura, who plays Isamu Kondo, as he couldn't be there in person.

Sakuma ended the stage by mentioning that this work has been in conception for about six years. He is really looking forward to fans finally seeing the heart and soul the staff and cast have put into it. For anyone looking for a fresh take on historical stories, inherit the winds seems like it will be a very solid answer to the many Shinsengumi tales we have seen before.
