Essay Manga Exhibition in Kyoto Until Sept 1st

The special exhibition "Save Me: Essay Manga Prescription Exhibition" will be held at the Kyoto International Manga Museum in Kyoto from April 25th to September 1st.

The Essay Manga Genre

In recent years, essay manga has been spreading in a variety of ways, mainly on SNS. The exhibition will reconsider the spread and appeal of the essay manga genre.

Exhibition Structure

The special exhibition consists of four exhibits. ``Exploring the beginnings of the essay manga genre'' focuses on essay manga for girls from the 1970s onwards, which are important for the origin of this genre. ``The Establishment of the Essay Manga Genre'' introduces the process by which essay manga was established as its own genre, including the reportage-style works that appeared after the 1980s, the parenting essay manga boom from the 1990s, and illustrated essays in fashion magazines.

In accordance with the above structure, a total of 330 original drawings by 27 manga artists will be exhibited. Original and reproduced original drawings will appear, including Momoko Sakura's ``Hitorizumou'', Moyoko Yasuno's ``Bijin Gaho'', Satari Oguri's ``Darling is a Foreigner'', Shigeyuki Fukumitsu's ``My Small-scale Failure'' and ``My Small-scale Life'', Kabi Nagata's ``Report of Going to a Lesbian Entertainment Club Because I Was Too Lonely'', ``A Story of How I Fell Apart When I Escaped from Reality'', and Tsuzui's ``Fujoshi Tsuzui-san''. Gregory Aoyama has drawn ``the story of his parents' house, which was a Kyomachiya,'' especially for this exhibition.

Various related events are also held. On April 26th, a roundtable discussion will be held where members of the exhibition production will discuss the highlights of the exhibition and essay manga.
