Yokohama Wall Manga Series Begins

The Sotetsu Movie building at the west exit of Yokohama Station in Kanagawa will close on September 30, 2026. For the last three months, a new series of wall manga ``Weekly Movie - Mubi's Great Action'' began on July 3rd, with continuations being drawn every week on the very walls of the building.

``Weekly Movie - Mubi's Great Action'' is a manga that is drawn directly on the wall of the Sotetsu Movie just like a weekly serial, and is developed as a ``wall manga'' that continues to be updated. Mural art, large-scale murals painted directly on the walls of buildings, is popular on street corners around the world as an expression of local culture, but this format is unique in the world as it continues to be painted on the walls of soon-to-be-demolished movie theaters as a ``weekly updated manga series.''

The Inspiration Behind the Project

For typical wall art, the goal is to complete it, and for manga, too, it reaches the reader only when it is a finished product. On the other hand, ``Weekly Movie'' has new stories added every week, and visitors can visit the building to follow the series.

Whether it's a rough sketch or a hand still in the process of drawing, it all becomes a piece of work. The paintings that are drawn from the first floor to the fourth floor eventually extend beyond the walls and into the restaurant inside the building, turning the entire building into a manga magazine.

Behind the Scenes

In addition, the ``behind the scenes'' process of producing wall manga will be presented as a fictional story. The ``front'' and ``back'' of the wall manga will be progressing simultaneously as two works. This ``behind the scenes'' story will be serialized in the manga magazine ZINE ``Monthly Movie'' as ``Yokohama You Can't See the Sea'', a manga about restarting one's life set at the west exit of Yokohama Station.

Regarding this project, the original author and executive producer commented, ``We will continue drawing manga on the walls of a building that will soon be demolished over the course of three months, as if in a weekly series. As far as we know, there is no precedent for such an attempt. We hope that you will come and see for yourself how the walls of the movie theater that have created the culture of the west exit of Yokohama Station will change every week.''

The wall manga ``Weekly Movie ~ Mubi no Daikatsugeki'' is set in the Sotetsu Movie building at the west exit of Yokohama Station in Kanagawa, and will be serialized until September 30th, when the building closes. The story will conclude at the art festival ``Story Crossing Art Fes'' that will be held in the same building on October 3rd and 4th after the building closes.
