Survey Snapshot: How Japanese Fans Rank Time‑Travel Protagonists
AnimeAnime asked thousands of viewers what character instantly springs to mind when they think of time‑travel. The poll, dominated by participants under 19, produced a surprisingly balanced gender split and highlighted a mix of magical‑girl, sci‑fi, and shounen heroes.
Homura Akemi: The Tragic Loop‑Keeper
Leading the pack, Homura Akemi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) captured 16% of votes. Her endless loop—repeating the same month to shield Madoka Kaname—makes her both heartbreaking and heroic. Fans love how she endures countless deaths, whispering, “I’ll never stop trying.”
Rintaro Okabe and Takemichi Hanagaki: Parallel Desperation
Both Rintaro Okabe (Steins;Gate) and Takemichi Hanagaki (Tokyo Revengers) earned roughly 8% each. Okabe, the self‑styled mad scientist, builds a phone‑based time machine to rescue his friend Mayuri. Takemichi, after a brutal murder of his ex‑girlfriend Hinata, jumps 12 years back to rewrite his middle‑school fate. Their stories resonate because each character fights a personal tragedy with relentless grit.
Supporting Time‑Travel Icons
Other fan‑favored travelers include Doraemon’s futuristic gadgets, Subaru Natsuki’s deadly resets in Re:ZERO, and the mythic Kagome Higurashi from Inuyasha. Even the whimsical Kaguya of Cosmic Princess Kaguya! and the school‑girl Makoto Konno (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) earned nods for their playful takes on temporal loops.
