The Return of Pokémon to Disney+
Ash and Pikachu are back, but the excitement is short-lived as fans realize the limited number of episodes available on Disney+. The highly anticipated streaming release of the original Pokémon anime series has arrived, but with only 27 episodes of the Indigo League arc, it's a far cry from the 80 episodes in the English dub and 82 episodes in the original Japanese version.
Disney+'s Limited Pokémon Offerings
Currently, Disney+ subscribers can only access a fraction of the Pokémon episodes they were hoping for. In contrast, Netflix still offers the first 52 episodes, making it the better option for fans looking to relive their childhood with Pokémon. The lack of episodes on Disney+ is especially disappointing given the franchise's 30th anniversary celebrations.
Alternative Streaming Options
While Disney+ may not have the extensive Pokémon library fans were hoping for, other streaming services like Netflix and Tubi are stepping up to fill the gap. Netflix offers a broader range of Pokémon episodes, including the original series and newer releases like Pokémon Horizons: The Series and Pokémon Concierge. Tubi, on the other hand, provides 52 episodes of the original anime series and several Pokémon movies for free with ads, making it an attractive option for fans on a budget.
New Projects on the Horizon
Despite the disappointment with Disney+'s Pokémon release, the franchise is looking strong with several new projects in the works. Pokémon Winds and Waves, scheduled for 2027, is generating buzz for its engaging visuals and influences from Pokémon Red and Blue. The success of Pokémon Pokopia, which combines social simulation with Pokémon elements, has also shown that the franchise can still deliver surprises and delight both old and new fans.
