The Gundam 50th Anniversary Project has started in preparation for the 50th anniversary of the start of anime broadcasting of the Gundam series. The plan was announced at Gundam Conference SPRING 2026 held today, May 15th.

The TV anime Mobile Suit Gundam began broadcasting on April 7, 1979, and the Gundam series will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2029. More than 90 works have been produced so far, and they have been developed in various fields such as products, plastic models, games, amusement, and music.
The Inspiration Behind the New Arc
To begin the project, the prologue movie The Boy and Gundam, which combines the time passed down from the Mobile Suit Gundam TV series, as well as the memories and thoughts of each person, will be released. The director was Watsukuro Hayakawa, and PEOPLE 1's Konjito was used for the music.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Theatrical Release
As a project that will be developed until 2029, it has been decided that Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO will be released in theaters. This work is a prequel to the movie Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM released on January 26, 2024, and revolves around a scenario drawn by series members Chiaki Ryosawa, Shigeru Morita, and director Kizuo Fukuda during the planning of SEED FREEDOM. A special video was also released.
Gundam 50th Anniversary Events
In addition, the celebration event GUNDAM-Con will be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba from January 9th to 11th, 2027. Based on the concept of creating together with fans, the same venue will feature projects involving the participation of creators who work on the Gundam series, exhibitions and experience corners where you can enjoy the works more deeply, and world competitions previously held individually in fields such as plastic models, cards, and games. Events are planned to be held around the world after the first one.
In 2029, the Yoshiyuki Tomino Exhibition (tentative) will be held at the Tokyo National Museum in Tokyo, an exhibition event that looks back on the trajectory of Yoshiyuki Tomino, who worked on the Gundam series. In addition, it was announced that a Gundam landmark concept is being developed, and that April 7th of each year has been officially recognized as Gundam Day in honor of the anime's first broadcast date.
