The book has gained popularity, with cumulative sales exceeding 3 million copies as of January 2026.

Behind the Scenes

The animation will be produced by Asahi Productions under the direction of directors Rito Suzuki and Aoi Mori. The cast includes Takuya Sato as Sasaki, Seisaku Hoshi as Yamada/Tayama, Toa Yukinari as Goto, Megumi Toyoguchi as Ohno, Rikuya Yasuda as Obata, Yoko Hikasa as Maezawa, and Shinya Takahashi as Suzuki.

Sasaki, a tired, middle-aged man who spends all his time on the company roads, finds comfort in his daily favorite cigarettes and the smiling customer service of Yamada, a female clerk at his favorite supermarket. One night, tired from work, Sasaki heads to the supermarket to soothe himself, but the Yamada he's looking for isn't there, and there's no place to smoke these days. The adult drama unfolds with the story of a woman named Tayama wearing a somewhat unusual outfit who tells Sasaki, who is depressed, that he can smoke here.

Sasaki, a middle-aged man who lives on the corporate street, finds his quiet comfort in the cigarettes he loves and the customer service of Mr. Yamada, a store clerk at his favorite supermarket.

One night when Sasaki is tired from work, Tayama, a strangely dressed woman, approaches him and says, ``You can smoke here.'

The first episode of the summer anime series ``Two People Suck Up Behind the Supermarket'' will be broadcast simultaneously nationwide on 28 TBS stations from July 9th.
