The Creative Process Behind Daemons of the Shadow Realm
Hiromu Arakawa, the renowned author of Fullmetal Alchemist, has revealed in a recent interview that the ending of her latest work, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, has already been decided. Speaking on Square Enix's 'Inside Square Enix' video series, Arakawa confirmed that she has figured out how the story of Daemons of the Shadow Realm will come to an end, while also deciding the major events that will lead to that particular ending.
Arakawa's approach to planning her stories is quite interesting. She starts by figuring out the ending and then decides on the major events that will lead to that conclusion. This process was also used for her previous work, Fullmetal Alchemist. However, she noted that there are differences in how she planned the stories and endings of Fullmetal Alchemist and Daemons of the Shadow Realm. In Daemons of the Shadow Realm, Arakawa had fewer events in the story worked out in advance when compared to Fullmetal Alchemist.
Collaboration with the Editor
Arakawa's editor, Jun Tanaka, also shared some insights into their collaboration. According to Tanaka, the team holds monthly meetings to review the plot and structure that Arakawa has prepared. These meetings are crucial in deciding which characters need to be where and expanding the story in interesting directions.
The anime television series adaptation of Daemons of the Shadow Realm premiered in April 2026 and has been well-received by fans. With Arakawa's careful planning and collaboration with her editor, it's no wonder that the series is shaping up to be an exciting and engaging story.
